Lincoln County's transportation infrastructure plays a vital role in its economy. Much of the county's recent growth can be attributed to US Highway 321, a four-lane divided highway built to interstate standards that virtually spans through the middle of Lincoln County, equally dividing the county to the east and west. To the north it connects to Interstate 40 and to the south it connects to Interstate 85. Both interstates are approximately 15 quick minutes away via US Highway 321. Interstate 77, the main north-south interstate serving the Charlotte area is merely 20 minutes due east of Lincoln County. Other crucial links in the local transportation network include NC Highways 16, 27, 73 and 150. A new four-lane Highway 16 is being built to interstate standards through eastern Lincoln County. Lincoln County is situated 28 miles northwest of Charlotte, North Carolina. Lincolnton is the county seat located in the middle of the county that is in the middle of the "I" connector grid of the local major interstates.

The "I" form grid connector through Lincoln County provides the surface connections for some 450 trucking firms located in the Charlotte Region providing inter-state and intra-state service. The Charlotte Region is a major distribution point for the east coast. Lincoln County boasts numerous nationwide distribution centers.
